The ship life-cycle with emphasis on the design and production phases is described. Partners forming dynamically changing collaborative networks are identified, their specific role is discussed with respect to information requirements and supply. Different systems making up the product “ship” are explained, e.g.: hull form, internal special subdivision, structure, machinery, outfitting, cargo handling.

CAE integration strategies followed in industry today are discussed under the two major issues: technical and organisational aspects. Whereas technical problems are mainly sought to be solved based on information exchange techniques (standardised product models like STEP), organisational problems are addressed with help of suitable information and communication systems. The requirements due to the specific design and production process are examined, a prototype solution is presented. R&D fields are identified based on the experience made.
